Since its launch in 2009, adidas SLVR has redefined casual-wear with a uniquely elegant perspective. Now, in the second collection under the creative direction of designer Dirk Schönberger, adidas SLVR pushes forward with a mix of precision tailoring and refined sportswear.
For Spring/Summer 2012, adidas SLVR finds inspiration in the combat sport of fencing, reinterpreting the ergonomic shapes and sleek lines of the fencing uniform for elegant suiting, shirting, and sportswear. From long buckled trenches and leather blousons with wide elastic details to perforated leather aviator jackets and tailored asymmetric vests, the pieces subtly recall the Olympic sport.
This season's women's collection is high on volume, like an oversize deconstructed cotton trench coat, a dramatic nylon windbreaker with buckle details, and a billowing cupro silk jumpsuit. But there are plenty of body-hugging offerings as well, like a cropped silk bomber jacket, high-waist shorts with attached suspenders, and a simple column dress with a low back and elastic detail. Leggings with seaming and stitching recall the fencing theme, while denim goes pop in bold shades of green, red, and saffron. Knitwear is an essential part of the collection, as seen in weighty metallic knit sweaters and tanks.
Meanwhile, adidas SLVR menswear is all about tailoring, as evidenced by elegant button-down shirts with attached vests that buckle on the side and classic suiting reinvented with sport details—which arrive chiefly in white with occasional pops of lime green and electric blue. While tailoring is a focus, the collection also includes chic asymmetric polo shirts and tough leather jackets, as well as denim in classic cuts or with stitched kneepad detailing taken from the fencing uniform. The buckle is a design element that recurs often—on footwear, swimwear, and apparel—and emphasizes the sport feel.
Footwear for women includes sporty cut-out oxfords, high-top trainers with corseted elastic ties, Japanese-style sandals with ribbon laces, and the signature wedge pump in canvas with cut-outs and a rubber sole. Men's shoes veer toward the classic with white oxfords and high-top trainers with fin details. Accessories include a canvas backpack with oversize buckles and shoppers in white canvas with a leather trim.
"Fencing as a sport is very elegant and dynamic, and the fitted look of the uniform translates very well into fashion," explains Schönberger. "The clothes are much lighter and more open this season, while keeping the tailoring and construction of the past."
