Opening Ceremony began as the in-house brand of the NYC boutique founded by Humberto Leon and Carol Lim in 2002. Since its beginnings as a "basics-plus" collection of monochrome knitwear, it has expanded into a design leader whose simple, yet timeless silhouettes are always approached with a fresh outlook.

Taking its name and mission statement from the modern Olympic Games, founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Opening Ceremony adopts a multinational approach to retail. In addition to stocking both iconic and emerging homegrown designers, every year OC showcases the spirit and merchandise of a visiting country, transforming each store into a marketplace for exotic souvenirs and international talent.

Some well-known figures are also fans of Opening Ceremony. Canadian rapper Drake, for example, has been spotted wearing one of the brand's jumpers more than once. Opening Ceremony attaches great importance to LGBTQ Positivity, as Nicky Minaj and Troye Sivan have not failed to notice. They attended the brand's spring 2019 drag-inspired fashion show.

Carol Lim and Humberto Leon presented Opening Ceremony Spring Summer 2022 Menswear Collection as a part of New York Fashion Week. For this season, designers found inspiration in their friends and collaborators. The designer duo introduced trendy oversized pieces, textural knits, and pastel polos. For the Spring Summer 2022 Collection, Opening Ceremony collaborated with Taiwanese illustrator Li Kuanzhen, who created drawings inspired by Chinese brush art that appeared on totes, accessories, silk shirts, and more. The brand is also a big platform for Asian cultures and a place where their heritage is celebrated through collections.
